Good news, but along with it comes another "mystery."
I just acquired another 16mm Banana Splits show. Ultimately I intend to get this transfered over to DVD-R, but my film stuff is in storage at the moment so I can't watch it...but I did take a look at some of the footage and much to my surprise, this is a half-hour version of the show, but with the original Season 1 opening and closing. Actually, at least the closing, and I presume also the opening, because it is wound "tails out" on the reel. The leader says "Foreign Banana Splits" and the number FBS-9, indicating this is not for US distribution (as yet I don't know if the audio is in English or some foreign language).
What's puzzling to me about this is that this is a half-hour cutdown. In the past, I have managed to get hold of two one-hour shows, also for foreign TV, which also had the original Season 1 opening and closing. That's incredible...has this been on foreign TV in reruns all along? I am guessing maybe they left the original segments on "by default" because they have no actual title card, no "And Friends" business, etc., so it says Banana Splits and it is Banana Splits. That's the only explanation I can think of...I was surprised to see it on a half-hour version. (I do remember seeing a listing for Worldvision in "Broadcasting" magazine, saying they offered a one-hour and half-hour version of the show, but I have no idea if any US station ever aired the one-hour version in syndication. Maybe it was for some hypothetical network run that never happened?)
Anyway...once again, in the event some sort of DVD set actually is coming down the pike, and the compilers need the original first season opening and/or closing...contact me!

No "Adventure Hour" either, I'll bet! Just Bingo chasing that train at the end of the opening titles. What a rarity! ;D

No "Adventure Hour" either, I'll bet! Just Bingo chasing that train at the end of the opening titles. What a rarity! ;D Nooooooooooo........I'm talking about a completely different opening title sequence here, with all first season footage. It's been posted on line before, on a Brazilian Hanna-Barbera site. (Which, of course, I can't find at the moment after a few minutes of Googling.) You'd probably recognize most of the footage in the opening from various episodes. As I mention in the introduction to the episode guide article...those tapes that have been floating around of the Season 1 NBC shows are later re-edited rerun versions with Season 2 openings, closings and bumpers. They do not reflect the shows as first aired, but rather circa 1970 Saturday morning NBC reruns. (Actually, given the time frame and what is known about which shows aired and re-aired on which dates, it is likely that some of those repeat versions never aired at all.) But you're correct about there being no show title in it. I believe this is because the show's title (in the first season) was shown and announced at the beginning as part of the Kellogg's sponsor billboard. Then that faded out, and then the song played. Just the song portion is what is on these film prints. It sounds like it's possible that you may never have seen this before. It's kind of like how only the second season "Monkees" opening was on all the reruns (of both seasons) for all those years, and I kept wondering when I was a kid how there could be a "rainbow room" shot at the end of the opening of the first season shows...now I know better.

Speaking of the original Season 1 open, I noticed you linked to a clip of it from the Brazilian Hanna-Barbera webpage on the main Banana Splits page today! I immediately downloaded it for posterity. Magnificent! I deduce from having seen these titles that the syndie Banana Splits & Friends main titles is undoubtedly that from Season-2. (Say...I just deduced something else! The Banana Splits & Friends is also the title of the primetime special which served as a preview of NBC's 1969-1970 Saturday Morning schedule...including Season 2 of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour! What a coinkeydink! ) To reiterate: what a rarity! ;D Thanks! (Wonder what the Season 1 closing titles looked like... )

Note Don Sandburg is credited as Associate Producer and Richard Donner is only credited for directing "Danger Island." One other thing, and I don't have the uncut original to compare, but note how the syndicated closing starts later, on the part of the footage where in the opening, they would be singing "over hill and highway the banana buggies go..." but by the end it's all back in sync, even with the addition of more footage than is in the opening (including a shot of Goofy Gopher). There is an odd audio edit on one of the "Tra La La" refrains where it seems to change keys for a bit. I believe that was done to cover up sound effects in the original, because the original closing was longer. The syndicated edit just begins at the point where they start superimposing the credits over it. To reiterate: what a rarity! ;D Thanks! (Wonder what the Season 1 closing titles looked like... ) It's the same, just with credits over it. The Hanna-Barbera logo is the same one on the syndicated shows, the yellow and orange "zooming" one.

For some reason I remember one of the BS gang having trouble getting into or out of one of the logs on the log rides in either the opening or closing credits. Does anyone remember this or is this just a foggy childhood misremembering I am having? Mark, it would be awesome to have the correct opening/closing segments for the DVD set.
